Culturally Competent Healthcare

It is expected that by 2050, the majority of the population in the United States will be non-white, comprised of many minorities that are currently being underserved by the healthcare system. This is in part due to a lack of cultural competence, which means that the cultural characteristics of the patients are not being correctly assessed, addressed, or considered in the medical setting. Therefore, it is instrumental that healthcare providers and healthcare systems and organizations make cultural competence a priority. Doing so would lead to better outcomes, increased savings for both the systems and the patients, and more effective care.
